Ruby Slippers December 5 7-8 pm

Hey everybody!!

Crap! It's December, we can't fool ourselves into thinking it's fall anymore and man, is it cold in the morning. Don't know about you, but getting up isn't easy anymore (say wha??) and without coffee, Ibuprofen and multiple layers (have never figured out looking hot in cold weather) there is no day.
Then it struck me, if the music was really fast and furious and bop worthy, things might, just might, look better, at least until we all acclimate to the reality that is Canada in the winter. (It never takes long, it's just that first few days....) (Gawd do I sound old )

So what better way to do that than an almost all punk almost all the time playlist (Apologies to Patrick Watson)

Let's Run ... Le Tigre
See No Evil ... Television
Walk Before Imitate ... The Homosexuals
Left of the Dial ... The Replacements
It Falls Apart ... Odds *
Hands of Production ... The Book Of Knots (brilliant album from 2007, Traineater. Check it out)
Cindy Tells Me ... Eno (genius)
Easy Eats or Dirty Doctor Galapagos ... Man Man
Wave Goodbye ... Animal Confession *
Blackwind ... Patrick Watson *
Exercise 5 ... CFCF *
Lanterns ... I, Us & We (new from album Mono)
(I Wanna Go To) New York City ... Bloody Five *
Sheena Is a Punk Rocker .... The Screwed * (members of local punk scene in the 70's)
The Witch ... The Sonics (inspired by Sonic Highway series with Dave Grohl)
Bikini Girls with Machine Guns ... The Cramps

Safety cuts: (may not make this show)
Happy House.... Siouxie and the Banshees
Years ... Gdansk *
Museum ... Future Sound of London

Enough to get the circulation going? You're welcome.

And as always thanks for listening.

Hey everybody,

The choices are pretty straightforward at this point.

You can go to The Mod Club to catch all the venue Grand Champions battle it out to pick this year's

Or you can go to the Indie Week closing party at the Bovine Sex Club. You will be joined by last year's Canadian winner, Sumo Cyco, New City Kings from Essex, England, and the Hot Sprockets from Dublin.  Good news, this event comes after the conclusion of the Mod Club event.

Ruby Slippers Addendum for tonight July 25th 7-8 pm

Hey hey, everybody...

Thought you might like to see what this Hillside thing is all about.

Check it out here... http://www.hillsidefestival.ca/

Because it takes place in a small space on a lake there is a definite limit to the number of folks who can be on the site. And because the population is limited, there is a feeling of community from the time you walk the long and winding path from the fields where you can park your car or disembark from the bus that shuttles back and forth from the centre of Guelph. There is honestly nothing to compare to the feeling of making that trek first thing in the morning with loads of other bleary eyed music lovers who have yet to sip their first organic coffees of the day. It's as if you checked your stress at the turnoff to the conservation area.
With four stages going at the same time, the biggest decisions of the weekend are what to see when, and what to eat for dinner. The food is healthy, the coffee and beer are local and organic, the dishes are rewashed and the water is brought in by truck so that there are no plastic water bottles used throughout the festival. There are drumming circles, craft workshops, a few select vendors, and change huts in case you want to have a swim during the day. Everything ends at 11 pm sharp. This little jewel of an area is surrounded by residential not far off, and good neighbours are important. Folks share sunscreen, conversation and save your place in line when you have to use the portajohns while waiting for your beer. You rarely see a cop because they are never needed. Volunteers run the thing for the most part. Artists collaborate on the fly, and it's not unusual to bump into and chat with whoever was on stage only minutes before.
Some years the weather has been brutal. Like the year it rained torrentially, and Owen Pallett refused to leave the stage until he finished (THEN they cut the power), or the year it was so hot everyone seemed to pick a stage and not leave for the day. I have seen performances that will stay with me for the rest of my life.  Make African Peanut Stew and Green Lentil Vindaloo as part of my culinary repertoire, just because it makes you feel so good inside.

Hillside is as close to perfect as a festival can be.

Hope you can make it if not this year, then in the times ahead. It's worth the trip.

Ruby Slippers Hillside Festival July 25 7-8 pm

Hey hey, everybody!

This weekend is the Hillside Festival at the Gueplh Conservation Area, considered for many to be the tiny perfect festival. Sadly, that also means many of us who would love to be there, eating vegetarian food while being surrounded by three days of non stop music, can't go because it's completely sold out.

Therefore, I have put together a playlist for the show touching on a bunch of the artists who will be there. Have left some of the more recognized bands out, but you will no doubt find new favorites as the show progresses.

So...Grab yourself some African Peanut Stew, an organic beer or two, and relax.

Dependent (ft. Owen Pallett) ... Light Fires *
Save Charlie ... Rubblebucket
Good Day At The Races ... Hollerado *
Tokyo Summer ... Mounties *
Show Me Your Eyes ... Royal Canoe *
Donna ... Stelle Ella Ola *
New Calm Pt. 2 ... Ought *
Wait up for You (Andy Dixon remix) ... Lift x Zerbin *
Dream World (ft. Grimes0 ... majical Cloudz *
Disposable Times ... Young Galaxy *
Demons ... Red Moon Road *
Jimmy Jimmy ... Born Ruffians *
Honest Work ... Hinindar *
Bricks ... Hey Rosetta! *

Thanks for listening!

Wow, kids, this is it.

Yonge Dundas Square ... DJ heaven until it's over.

Bearing in mind that there have been free concerts in Sonic Boom, Trinity Bellwoods, and all over the place, there was no excuse not to be part of the festival.

Didn't even touch the MIO streetcar experience, or Vice Island or the Bruise Cruise, or the Boiler Room.

Gotta tell you, Monday is going to be a hard one.

Cheers!

NXNE Part 4 June 21/14

NXNE Part 3 June 20/14

Hey everybody,

End of the week, more choices to be made.
If I was more nimble, I would be bouncing around like a little rubber Super Ball. (Remember those? Hard enough to bounce onto the roof and break an occasional window? ) (Heard it from a friend...)

But these caught my eye, so here we go.

See you later for Friday's line up!

NNE in Progress Part One

Hey everybody,

Although technically, NXNE started a few ago, there were a reasonable number of events and artists from which to chose. If you are a diehard festival goer, it was not impossible to float about and see what there was to see, hear what there was to hear.

As of Wednesday, though, it gets hard.

So here are my picks for things to consider. As I always sa, all choices are sound ones.
Read the list, mull it over, and go your own way.

The Cameron ...Painted Saints, Amity Beach and others. Depends on how late you stay out on a school                             night
The Garrison... Thoughts on Air, Thus Owls (Montreal is well represented this festival)
The Hideout... Go for the Eyes, Big Name Actors (will be playing them on the show)
The Horsehoe ...Mutual Benefit, LOW (midnite to 1 am...hard time for a Wednesday)(dammit)
The Rivoli ... Bugs In The Dark, Amos The Transparent, Royal Tusk and friends
Wrongbar...  Mysteries, Parallals, Foxtrott and others.  Solid show

And who doesn't love a secret show? That would be The Tattoo at 1 am.

Tomorrow is another day. More completely unbiased suggestions for you listening pleasure.

Wednesday 11 June 2014

Sunday 25 May 2014

This has been on my mind for a while....

Hey everybody,

Losing Oderus from Gwar was big. Really big. Particularly as he was an alien from Hamilton.
